Ug, yeah. In Warcraft 3 it actually became sort of difficult to simply play the game, at one point. I remember a time when I would get booted from any game if I simply started to download even a little. God forbid that your file name should have a slightly different number or letter at the end.
@Kilgore Trout: I would beg to differ. Every time any player is identified as muted by their trademark exclusive use of the chat wheel, it instantly turns into a mob scapegoating where the match is now 100% their fault and everyone is to report them. That's not just dota 2, it's human nature.
@Khaz: Ah, I understand now. Although I don't think being muted and confined to using the chat wheel would necessarily get you reported. If I can't communicate with a teammate because they speak another language or whatever, it makes me annoyed, but I don't report them.
@Kilgore Trout: Muting someone from your end isn't the same as reporting them and getting them muted. When people report you, you can be muted for a period of time that increases with each mute, up to a week. Being muted renders the game unplayable and makes it CERTAIN you will be reported again.
@Khaz: Wait, are you sure that's how it works? I always assumed that there being separate buttons for "mute" and "report" meant that muting somebody just meant you didn't have to listen to them, and that if you wanted to report them then you used "report" instead.
@Magnus: Actually, there's a group on Starcraft 2 trying to bring something like this back (It's called Planet Protoss Tribes, but it's basically the same thing).
Mafia is also strong on it, but I heard it's run by an asshole.
How the hell can you talk about an "automated punishment system" like it's a good thing. It degrades EVERY conflict to a popularity contest. You can't go two games without getting muted, and muted people get reported for being muted so then you get low prio, where you get muted again. FUCK dota 2
Also, I just played my first Overthrow match and it was fun even though I lost! 10 people just all trying to kill each other to be the first to 20 kills, and everyone for themselves! It's great if you want a fairly quick game, and nobody is going to get mad at you if you fuck up.
I don't know if it'll be as bad as that, Jo. I mainly play unranked All Pick these days, and sometimes somebody does abandon the game. But usually when the happens, the 4 remaining players will still stay and try to win, at least up until it's clear they have no chance of winning.
@Sanderlo: Yeah, I tried Dota 1 a few times to see what's all the fuss about, but since I had no idea about its actual depth and fun, I just didn't really grab the concept. Dota 2 though...my favorite by far. Still, I'd love to see all those games you listed too, ported to it.
@Sanderlo: I feel you. I've never liked dota 1 because of the absolutely abhorrent community...LoL (and now dota 2, I switched recently) feels a lot better, though. And now that it has WC3-styled custom games, it's like a dream come true !
Good old days indeed...So many maps I want to see again, like LoaP, Darwin's Island, Islands Troll Tribes, Hero Siege, RPGs, Angel Arena, BfME, Risk, Footmen Frenzy, Hero Line Wars, Lie Tower Wars, TDs in general...
@Magnus: Azeroth Wars, LoaP, Darwin's Island, Dark Deeds, Hero Siege, Dragon Ball games, ORPGs, Final Fantasy, SWAT Aftermath, Rise of Civilizations, Enfo's, Battle for Middle Earth, and so many more...
I hated when I came back to WC3 and people only hosted DoTA. I've never liked DoTA.
To be honest, I call people so much racist shit in chat in DoTA 2 its not funny. I've gotten low priority once, due to a weeklong spout of outages that ended up with me abandoning a bunch of games. The report function does sweet fuck all.
Oh those were the days...back then, when Risk, WoW Arena Allstars, Castle Wars, Stronghold, Troll Island, Are you a Lucker, Tree/Sheep/Zombie Tag, Orc Gladiators, The Weakest Link, Tower Defenses, and my personal favorite, Mafia were still popular...it was awesome. I wish we could port those.
