Ninty doesn't put out Metroid games because they are popular in NA and not popular in Glorious Nippon. Also anything Extra Credits says, take with a grain of salt. They are NOT industry insiders like they claim to be.
No, Metroid games do not sell well. The Metroid series as a whole is one of Nintendo's worst selling IPs out there (near Star Fox and F-Zero). Heck, even Animal Crossing is doing better. Also, look at Splatoon. It sold more than Metroid's best selling game on a console with smaller install base.
@Tyler: Unfortunately, after watching an episode of Extra Credits that might be more the fault of our trademark laws than Nintendo's. If they don't pursue infringements, they can actually lose the right to their trademark.
If anyone is curious it looks like IGN has a list of Rumored and confirmed switch games? only 5 day 1 games planned for a system that's rumored to not come with a game....
People seem to forget there was a Metroid game released just last year for the 3DS. Granted it wasn't a great game, and was roughly as much to do with "Metroid" as my little Homer Buddha statue on my monitor base here, but it was a Metroid game...
for anyone who's curious yes the 5 year old game the comic is talking about IS skyrim. also i suspect 1,2 switch won't be very popular since it's supposedly not gonna be coming with the system itself.(i think Jo shares this opinion, since he seems to list it as "shovelware waggle" on this graph)
I feel like Metroid suffers from the issue of a lack of universality: The Prime series did NOT sell well in Japan, in part because that country's not big into FPSes. Fusion and Zero Mission did okay but not great. Other M was an attempt to bridge the gap between Western & JP audiences, but, well...
It was eight years between Super and Fusion. We thought that was long, but it's been about twelve between Zero and now. It's past time for another proper Metroid game - side-scrolling pixel art is where it's at.
OtherM's themes may've worked back in Zero Mission. Heck, they pretty much did - there was tie-in manga and everything.
But by the time Samus had reached Destroyer of Worlds status, not so much. I mean, killing Ridley was more or less her hobby at the point OtherM fits in...
I'll be honest. I've never bought a Samus game. I feel that if she were to be given a game it would have to be a form of action RPG format. We are talking Mass Effect here. However, for the game to be capturing past 2D scroller you'd have to make the world more interesting and populated (people).
Looking forward to Super Mario Odyssey, at least insofar as it seems like we may be finally ditching the back-to-basics security blanket Nintendo had on for the entirety of the Wii U's life.
Still cautious though, we've been burned in the past by expecting too much of a game.
They have the manpower to make many more launch titles, but they're lazy assholes. Everyone who cares about Samus as a character hasn't forgotten Other M(assive shit). A new console would be a great chance to get her back to form, but they're assholes.
I think the best thing they can do for Metroid right now is revisit the premise of Metroid Dread, either as 2D or 3D, as a sequel to Fusion and a continuation of that story. They almost certainly won't though, because it means dragging Samus away from her status quo and the familiar power suit.
Other M sold well because Prime was great and had everyone hyped. Other M was very poorly received though. Essentially Other M killed the franchise. Fed Force was their push at a non-samus based Metroid game, which also flopped. (Implying Samus was the problem, and not the terrible controls(cont))
But other M sold well: http://www.nerfnow.com/comic/372
I don't know why they cancelled AM2R if they weren't doing anything with the IP tho...
Last "metroid thing" I could recall was http://www.nerdragecomic.com/index.php?date=2012-11-16
That's mainly because Metroid doesn't sell well in Japan and when they director of the series got involved due to the fact that the team who made the Prime trilogy did a better job than him, it ruffled his ego and he had to get involved. Which resulted in OtherM and Federation which were total flop.
I found Prime fascinating but I got lost on the first world after the tutorial. Probably because I wasn't invested enough. I sucked at the 2D metroids like I did at mario and megaman, always more of a hack and slash and FPS guy. So ya, got lost cause I didnt care all that much. mostly.
if I see hyrule warriors in addition to breath of the wild on the switch, and if the device works well and people like it, I will actually save up and buy one. And this is coming from someone who is part of the PC Master Race.
Yeah, Metroid has basically stalled. Other M was a big blow to the mainline series, and meanwhile Metroid Prime: Federation Force was released last year. What's that? You totally forgot about that game, or had no interest in it? Nintendo noticed, yeah.
Personally I'm hyped for the short teaser of a Fire Emblem Warriors game. After Hyrule Warriors was so good it's just asking for it, and that may be the one I buy the system for, depending on how Zelda's WiiU version compares.
I don't think this presentation says anything about the future of the Metroid series. There's still E3 and plenty of Nintendo Directs ahead, maybe something Metroid is in there somewhere.
I believe Nintendo has no idea what to do with Metroid OR F-Zero.
After Other M was received so poorly Nintendo is sort of afraid to put out another Metroid *baring fed force since thats more of a spin off*
Gonna be hard for Metroid to recover after Other M, I thought? Also, Nintendo themselves hasn't developed a Metroid in like, forever. All the more recent ones were licensed out to others to develop, IIRC.
