I am 90-95% sure that the 2016 Doom Guy is indeed the same one from the original games. (but not Doom 3 that is alternate Doom Guy)
So I assume he found followers (or they found him) which is why he was the only one to have the sci-fi armor.
@Raxyz old Gaming magazine called GamePro had "Protips" of varying usefulness scattered through the articles. A member of the Doom community made a parody (Anne's tip) edited to look like it came from GamePro. And thus a meme was born.
@Adeptus Enginus I can't say for sure, but there's been a few article that point out refferences that the 2016 'Doomguy' is the same Marine from the Original Doom, basically linking Doom, Doom II + Various map packs and Doom (4). It does leave Doom 3 out, but eh.
@Raxyz: the game (like many others) offers gameplay "tips" in the loading screens. These tips are occasionally informative, but usually common sense stuff (shoot the enemies; if you run out of health you die; ammo=good) Play on monetary tip vs game "tip"
@John Peirson: He was, which makes it all the more awesome. He survived an invasion from hell, invaded it back twice, then saved the Earth... because he was a decent human being who loved his bunny.
I thought he was a marine who punched out his CO when ordered to shoot civilians, getting sent to Mars as punishment upon which he was forced to guard the door with nothing but a pistol...up until he noticed all the other soldiers were screaming, at which point he went in himself.
@Beastwolf: The Doomguy was employed by the UAC. In the original continuity, he was just a security guy who stepped outside for a quick smoke break (On one of Mars' moons) when all hell broke loose.
@Beastwolf If you're going by DOOM 2016 canon, nobody. He's a ancient being known as the Doomslayer who was born of an old order of demon slaying knights, somehow got sci-fi armor and proceeded to run around hell slaughtering everything and being literally too angry to die til they sealed him away.
