@Shareazu: If you are going at those lengths, why no claim that tanks are just tools too? Tools like sickles, hoes, handles, etc were directly adapted to be used as weapons because the use of weapons were banned for those people. Unlike swords that gradually evolved from other weapons.
@T: I guess you can say katanas and swords in general are sort of derived from a tool, too, since any sword is basically just a very long knife, which are tools.
@Christian Francies: There is a thing called "war scythe". Also many weapons evolved from tools. Nunchakus, tridents, bo-stick. From the 4 ninja turtles only the katanas were not originally a tool.
So as much as a scythe wouldn't really last long digging, it seems like these tools are indestructible so it's fine to use in a similar fashion as a pickaxe.
Scythes are farming tools, so while it's not made specifically for *digging*, a scythe is no more or less a weapon for killing than shovel is. It's mainly a tool, just a like a shovel.
And it's actually even worse as a practical weapon than a shovel is. :V
