Wow that reference is so ancient, I feel like fighting North Koreans

It is absolutely a reference to the original Zork, though I do believe the Spellbringer series also contains the reference.

Also, Beyond Zork is still in my top 5 gaming experiences of all time, easily.

Just a quick "You know that?": Don't starve had a "Grue" monster too, before being renamed (and being revealed by a in-game character) as "Charlie". Same behavior, she will attack you in complete darkness, depleting a massive amount of health and sanity.
