Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! The irony! Maybe they should make games where modern people are sent back to the stone age and have to make use of their advanced knowledge to build up a society that is roughly on par with modern society so they can get back to all the modern amenities they enjoy.
You ever play Dandara, Jo? It's low fantasy, but also steeped in afro-brasileiro mythos, from what I understand. (You probably heard a lot about it being where you from, but still...)
The timing for this is a bit... Well, Magic just announced a set taking place in Kamigawa, a Plane with a bunch of God Beings and an asian flavor. Apparently the power of Kami (the god beings) are now harnessed and they're a neon cyberpunk styled Plane now. So, yeah. Good timing.
I wish we had more of the fantasy future settings. A number of fantasy games touch on the idea of some high tech past to their world, but we don't get enough like Vampire Hunter D, Ruin Explorers, or Adventure Time; where its a post magical apocalypse of Earth, maybe where the magic is dimension tec
@Chris Sizemore: Precisely. High fantasy's been a staple genre in games since forever. The reason why the sudden deluge of cyberpunk games is so jarring is because they exist just to ride on the coattails of Cyberpunk 2077 and it suddenly bringing the genre into pop-culture again.
Because there is a fan base, there will be demand for it.
That is the simple answer.
Fantasy games on the other hand are based on the past. Watch Horrible Histories to see why people might not want to return to the dark ages.
Funny thing you mention that because Final Fantasy XIV have all that. Regions based on places outside Europe (middle east, Mongolia and others), lasers and trench coats.
The wave of cyberpunk games is because 2077 looked hype and like it was going to be The Next Big Thing for 2 years. Because of that lots of developers hopped on the popularity bandwagon like it always happens and hoped to ride the cyberpunk wagon to profits. Shovelware developers chase trends.
I am a fan of high fantasy, but even I'm getting tired of the stock collection of 'heroic' races all the time. Gimme a full-orc paladin of a good god, trying to fight evil and predigest against him... heroic kobolds, slime mages, just... no more elves/dwarves/humans as the lion's share of options.
Ha. The elf looks like Deedlit. Also, Jesse, I don't think you're getting the punchline of the comic. They're being hypocritical since there's tons of fantasy/medieval themed games.
Same tbh. I just wish sci-fi games wouldn't always amount to basically "shoot w/ same projectile guns as we do in modern times", with the game having practically no energy weapons
