In my case, my WoW account had a twelve digit randomly generated password composed of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and punctuation - as well as a key fob authenticator - and neither of those had been shared with anyone. And it was still hacked. *shrug* It happens.

Hacked once in the timespan of 10 years, due to a keylogger.
Notified that my account was compromised and banned, did recovery, checked other accounts. Japanese IP accessed my GMail and other things. I'm not saying it's not my fault, but it's bound to happen eventually.

Technically that would be cracking not hacking. Hacking is the entire category and is generally not illegal.
Lobster
Even if they DID manage to get your password through no fault of your own, 90% of the time even that isn't "hacking." It's phishing or social engineering.
Now, when they can actually break through Hotmail's security, that is hacking and they could make a ton of money going legit.
hurpdurp

Don't forget the seemingly legitimate websites you go to for your everyday business, such as photo uploading and file uploaders as just a small potential example. Make a password there and they may have had a malicious intent from the beginning. Be careful WHERE you make passwords.

True and not true at the same time. A real case for example, where some hackers cracked NCSoft's Aion's security and managed to lay their hands on part of users' database... Serious company too, yet got screwed up.

The one that makes me laugh is when i get one of those "confirm your details" e-mails for a bank I don't even use, or a game I don't play. DERP.
Kloptik
And after that, if the account has nothing worthwile, though luck.
If it has an authenticator, more time wasted. GG. It's not a good way to make money nor get accounts. Only dumbasses would try it... it's a guaranteed waste of time.
Kloptik
Not saying it's impossible to get a password from Blizzard database, that's fucking difficult but could theorically be pulled off if the circumstances were right and done by someone who knows his stuff.
But past that, there is decryption that may not work and use a homemade algorithm...
Kloptik
The time it would take to get a password that does not guarantees money gain is immense.
It's not a worthwile way for anyone who wants to make money. Assuming they will sell what's on the account / use it's gold to sell, etc.
Kloptik
Taytay, that's impossible.
No one can hack into Blizzard Servers then decrypt a password. Would take too long. Additionnally, just randomly aiming at a password, hoping there is good stuff behind is stupid. They could find one of the 19862271296 trial accounts.

The best ones (aside from the fact that my account has been defunct since before Burning Crusade hit beta) are the "we suspect you are selling this account, please log in through this broken attempt at hiding a URL under another URL to verify that it is still yours" emails.
Narbodi

I still get attempted WoW-jacking spam, often with mostly copy-pasted website crap, and the actual scam is written thus:"we will be complimentary seat to the 5,000 players. You can log Web site application, we will be lucky players randomly." Certainly, this is legitimate!
