Skyrim is a lazy console port and it shows in some of the textures... that most texture mods suck and just upscale then blur them is another matter though.

I can't imagine playing any of the tes games without mods, it's not just skins and textures. Mods for more spell hot keys, a ui that sorts items by weight or price, a fix to make magic not blow so much... There's bug fixes, like adding missing crafting recipes.
