Nice joke! Except Demon soul's is the cheap game and is hard for well.. the sake of being hard.

Dark Soul's prepares you, it's easy to not get cursed, and at no points do you have to "farm souls".

I'm also going to have to generally disagree here.

Of the two, Demon's Souls was definitely more prone to honest-to-God-cheap kills. I'm looking at you random dude in a room of explosives.

When did you enter the area? After Anor Londo I hope, otherwise you simply entered an area that's too hard for your current level. There are glowing stones in the area, follow them and you find a NPC who will bring you to a corpse with a lantern, even if you somehow die the lantern stays.

"I think this is bad design"

There is literally a path of lights for you when you first enter, and then you get cutscened to a corpse with a lantern that proceeds to literally point you the way to the end along the wall. I'll admit the enemies hurt, but it's hardly bad design. Blightown is worse.

@Ultraseamus: To be fair, in real life, you have more than one opportunity to get an adequate light source. THIS is a punchline. It's common knowledge that Dark Souls is hard as hell. Even if I didn't know that, the comic conveys that you're frustrated by dying, and that's funny. And you did it without making a single reference to a gameplay mechanic. So why can't you're Dota comics be this simple?

There are games like SuperMeatBoy. In SuperMeatBoy you have to memorize every f*cking frame. It is a try & error game.

Dark Souls is not such a brutal hard game. You have to be careful, to look, to explore. DarkSouls punish the play because of carelessness.

To get to the tomb of the giants you have to go through the catacombs, and to get through the catacombs you have to kill the necromancers to stop the skeletons from killing you. the last one drops the skull even.

Totally agree with this, Demon Souls was difficult, but I rarely got frustrated because most deaths I could understand what I did wrong. On the other hand... Dark Souls often has just.. trial and error moments that just make me turn off the system, especially that god awful Tomb of the Giants.
Seriously?
It's funny because rookie mistakes like ever being cursed or not somehow getting a necromancer's lamp to drop are only things you would see in your first playthrough. There's only one type of enemy that could ever reliably curse you, and you would have to stand perfectly still in his gas attack.

The first thing you need to realize about Dark Souls is that /dying isn't losing/. In Dark Souls death is one of the tools at your disposal. You try and die and lose absolutely nothing for dying. It's important to your enjoyment of Dark Souls to get out of the "dying means I suck" mentality.
Roeg
That is why you go to the place where the game suggests you to go, Jo. If you paid attention to what the people said and went to the castle instead of going to the higher-level areas with the skeletons or the curse-phantoms, you would find the challenge much more to your level.

I'm sorry Jo, but the pitch black darkness isn't "terrible design", it's meant for it. You're supposed to either walk around blind or sacrifice defense for a lamp. That's the whole point of the area. That's the point of the game. You die. You learn. You die again. You learn some more. Then you win.

Lastly, at first playthrough, you don't expect this boss damage to NOT revert. So you have no inclination to Save&Quit. Sure, you don't actually damage his healthbar, but still, it's a very vague hint. So yea, 90% of people, even if they are decent at videogames, will DIE at least once on BoC.

Well, there were the colored lights on the floor which showed the path there, and that whole dark section isn't that large.

Eh, I found the falling floor in Blighttown bullshit, since there's no other falling floor (at least to my knowledge) in the game.

Casual is the only thing that comes to mind.

Dark Souls has some excellent design, but not everyone is good enough to play it.

As arrogant as it sounds, it's true. A casual player doesn't want to take the time to understand a game, he just wants to play it, which is also fine.

I remember getting here the first time. Even with lantern and wiki cheating, I was getting my ass handed to me. I didn't think it was particularly cheap though, that honor goes to Bed of Chaos.

Add me on GFWL and I'll give you a hand with the tomb (PC)

BTW, if that's bad for you, I'm looking forward to a comic about Anor Londo :3

That's a pretty smart move, Jo.

There isn't nothing worst that forcing yourself to play a game and not enjoying it.

In other words, being too hard is dark souls design. But there's still ways to get through the darkness or dim visibility (if you get a light source) through the giant skeletons, ranged attackers, wheel skeletons, black knights, traps, pit falls, skeleton babies, flying asshats, that one npc

@BobisOnlyBob Except you can say that with virtually any game. No one calls adventure games "hard" despite the fact that you can compress a 20+ hour first run into a ~4 hour second run simply by "understanding it and know the terrain and enemies".

Poor design? Hardlyl. Its working as intended to be one of those zones you fear more than any other. Cept for all the other zones you fear more than any other.
BobisOnlyBob

@imercenary: The first run through Dark Souls always takes time, but it's about developing awareness and player skill. Your second run takes a fraction of the time, because you understand it and know the terrain and the enemies. It doesn't even take long to learn how to navigate TotG without light.
RPRezo

It's almost like you've never played meroidvania-stiled games, where the whole point is finding items that make previously unpassable parts of the game open to exploration. And this is awesome.
imercenary

@Clayvman Its not about patience though, its about time. The difficulty of Dark/Demons Souls is directly proportional to the amount of time you put in.

"Dark Souls" and "terrible design" in the same text is certainly an error.
BobisOnlyBob

You're handed a straightforward light source on the way in. If you have sorcery, there's a dedicated spell for it. And if you do Demon Ruins to Lost Izalith first, there's a much more convenient permanent light source obtainable. You play MOBAs, and yet you can't suck this up?

You tried going through Tomb of the Giants BLIND? BAAAHAHAHAHAHA!! ...but seriously, if you're getting roadblocked trying to go one way, that's when you pick somewhere else to go, instead.
Clayvman
I never had a problem with it, of course I'm a lot more patient when it comes to video games so maybe I had that in my favor....specially with Dark Souls...deaths and losing everything didn't bother me that much. Tomb of Giants was the first place I beat. Just have to get something that casts light.

@Glamador How is it cheap and frustrating? Areas are clearly lit, attacks are clearly telegraphed, and the game doesn't punish you for failure like Dark Souls and Demon's Souls does, it just asks you to try again.
Random

I actually found Dark Souls easier to beat than Monster Hunter.
Glamador
@Geary: I disagree with this sentiment is most ways. It IS somewhat similar to the Souls combat system, which is what drew me to it. HOWEVER, it is in every way as cheap and frustrating but without the sense of satisfaction that comes from exploration and discovery. It is a slog in every sense.
Jo, I reccomend Monster Hunter. It's like Dark Souls/Demon's Souls, but with less cheapness and arbitrary difficulty and more spending the entire game in a series of increasingly awesome boss fights.

Tomb of Giants was a terrible place. Even with the things that let you see where you're going, you don't have much sight.

You either need to track down a spell, [Cast Light](you need to defeat the lake hydra.) or get the [Skull Lantern] -from inside- the tomb to be able to see at all.
BlueFlytrap

Maybe you should bring a light. There's 3 different kinds so pick your poison.

You can also just run right through the tomb without fighting anything and Nito is a joke.

@That Guy: I started playing the expansion (although I also did a 180° turn after seeing what Tomb of Giants looked like), and the Guardian didn't seemed that much (killed two of the last 4 bosses yet). Still, I'm no near the two bosses of the expansion, so there is frustration yet to come.
That Guy
Heh, wow, if that's what broke your back then Dark Souls wasn't meant for you. Dark Souls expansion is literally Prepare to Die, if you aren't, welp, then Sanctuary Guardian will be where you're controller becomes one with the ceiling.
