With kickstarter the artist have more freedom of creation. The artists can make the game the way they want it to be instead of what the marketing team of a big company thinks what is profitable. And this means that we can get more original games instead of generic crap that that sells.
T
The problem with that is that the company backing them will also meddle on the game production. They interfere in the creative work of the game makes, makes demands over what the game features and what not, like "make the character male, gamers don't want to play as a girl" or other sort of shit.

For the ones that don't understand how they make games usually companies like Wayforward don't have money to produce games by themselves another company pays them to make the game. If you see the other Shantae games they have the Capcom brand on them. That's because Capcom was the one backing them.

6K to go, we're gonna do it!

So you either pick the $350 or the $1000 pledge reward. I want to see your artwork (or enemy design) in it! Awesome way to promote your artwork!

It's also the first time I've seen a company with a good track record using it, but from an accounting perspective it is an excellent idea that removes any risk associated with sales.

I think the Ducktales game was funded by another company, so it was not made through KS.
This ended up being a long post anyway, sorry. But it should explain why the Kickstarter model has it's advantages (piracy reduction, ensured no loss at the end of the year) and also, it's shortcomings (do they really need that much?)
In the rare cases where too many people pirate and they bring in no profit, by making a Kickstarter, where the game is only sold if completly funded, they avoid the risk of making no money at all because of piracy. Because if not funded = no game. No risks there and it is a fair way to #dealwithit.
But I can look at their sheet come the end of their fiscal year.

Another advantage that the Kickstarter model has is that it prevents piracy. I know piracy is not bad in itself as people who pirate may not have bought. However the bonuses and stuff is an incentive to some people and also...
Beyond that amount, they invest in the bonuses - chapter, costumes. What we can't tell is where the money goes exactly and that annoys me because I'd like to see the total charge needed to make Shantae to see if they ripped us with the Kickstarter...
With Kickstarter, their accountant go through the numbers and estimates the cost of making the game - charges. Then, they ask for that on Kickstarter. 400K. Now I have to admit, maybe they needed less, nobody knows - but the base price for the game, 15, is a correct price for the product I get.
But you, as someone with no formation in the domain of accounting, do not see all the different costs that goes in there beyond salaries and assets production - there are MANY more costs associated and complicated formulas to assign for instance electricity used/assigned to Shantae Department.
The difference between making the product and selling and going through Kickstarter first is that Kickstarter ensures a profit. The normal model is using company resources and selling the game then. If the game doesn't sell as much as it cost to make, they lose money. You know that already.
I really don't want to make a long post explaining this to people who have no prior knowledge of how accounting really works, so I'll make this simple. It will have things you don't know about so it's okay if you don't understand but I'll try to make it so everyone can.

@taytay: I can buy a AAA game for 5$ on Steam Sale, I don't see your point. The deal is good because it's what you would pay for the game at launch. But if you want to go really cheap, why pay 5$? Lots of free games out there too.
taytay
Really? Excelent deal?

It will be like 5$ on a future humble bundle (with 5 other games) or at to 10$ on a steam sale. These are excelent deals. 20$ is pretty much full price for this game, when it actually released. I believe actual supporters deservers a little better
about 11 years ago
@taytay: If you don't want to support WayFoward, pledging the 20$ gives you a digital copy of the game, which is an excellent deal.
taytay

Huh, my last message lost.

I just wanted to say they are already producing a ton of platformers, they don't really need 'funding' for almost complete another one. You really thought they won't release this game if it was not funded?
taytay
I mean, check their games
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WayForward_Technologies
You really need they need money for another platformer? Hell, there is another shantae game from them.
taytay
@geary that company already produced a ton of platformers, another one is not really huge thing for them. Only thing that will cost them from stratch is art and from the looks of it, it is ok too. I am not saying game is fully finished, however I don't believe at this point they need 'funding'.
@taytay: They have a barebones demo right now to show off what they WANT the game to look like. Creating a quality game is very expensive, as is marketing it and getting it on any platform other than linux.
Don't forget that they also take Paypal beyond Kickstarter. Like I said yesterday, they CAN reach 700K EVEN if the KS has ended, through Paypal, and fund the costume swap, and therefore Jo owe us a Bath pic.

So even if they don't reach 700K by tomorrow, they just might next week.

43K to go.
taytay
They are basically skimming free money just before releasing their game. I mean, it is not even they are making games cheaper since it is funded. All funds are basically full profit for them.
taytay
This kickstarter games are really getting stupid, game is already there. From the looks of the videos most of the art is too. Did they go for debts? no. What are we actually funding?
T
@Len Ygan you will be able to back it via paypal after the kickstarter ends

On a somewhat related note, Sunless Sea just wrapped up their Kickstarter, and they passed the stretch goal for Zubmarines and for the creators to get tattoos related to the game in the past 24 hours. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/failbetter/sunless-sea

Ahh figures... I just now get a job again. Sorry Shantae, but I'll have to wait until you come out to give you my money. :c

I bet that we will hit 700k! But I was looking forward the 900k goal...
Speaking of which.
Jo, you might wanna put the Paypal link in the description too, tell the people that the funding doesn't stop all together. If we can't reach $700,000 by tomorrow, we can by next week via Paypal.
At first, I wondered what a mutch was.

Then I realized it was a typo.
You guys can still pledge via Paypal even after the Kickstarter is done. Just to let you all know.

I really wanted to back Shantae and Mighty No. 9, but I already backed up some games already and bought too many new stuff recently. Think I'll just buy the games when they come out eventually.

Really, so hmm, 2500 could buy a hell of a PC! Could even run GTA V on it.
Wait..
I had a choice between backing Shantae or backing Mighty No. 9... I went with Mighty No. 9, and I'm not sorry about it. Definitely gonna be picking up Shantae when it comes out though.
