BG1 while great shows it's age, and the low level dnd combat may not be enjoyable. BG2 is much more "modern" player friendly I think, so if for some reason you don't feel like finishing the first one give second a try.
Baldur's Gate 1&2 were the best games of my youth. Some aspects might be a pain to players when comparing to todays games but still its masterpiece. I wouldnt bother though if you were planning on skipping some dialogues and rely just on questlog.

Well I never did Baldur's gate until a few weeks, and I can tell you it's one of the best RPG I ever played(from the eyes of someone who didn't play it when it was "new").
To be exact, I think Baldur's gate 1 is great, but Baldur's gate 2 is nothing more than a masterpiece.

This is the reason why dota 2 sucks.

Oh man, Baldur's Gate is the shit!
I recommend checking out the enhanced editions. They eliminate all the hassle of installing mods just to get basic functionality, and they added new content to boot!
luck? hardly! the baldurs gate series is THE greatest Western eRPG series, at least in my opinion... if you manage to get used to the graphics and the weird gameplay mechanics (weird for some, anyway), you'll see it's really a great Game... the cradle of all modern western eRPG's!

@Nerf_NOW! I'm ashamed of you Jo. Miss Engie's suffering from severe mental instabilities. With time and treatment we'll get her sorted out but she can't take any more blows to her ego. So we're going to have to ask you to cut off her connection to Nerf Now for her own welfare.
I bit the bullet and just finished Planescape Torment. An amazing story like Baldur's Gate and they now share #1 spot of best RPG of all time on my list.
@Cade: Perhaps play it on easy? So you can enjoy most of the game without bothering with mechanics.

@HollyDana Luckily we have a retired Spy on our staff to disable that thing. She's sedated and back in her room. She'll be fine with some therapy. We're going to get her back to health. Don't you worry. Just avoid any mention of tentacles. She seems to have severe PTSD about the subject.
@Mister Jay: Have you seen her recently ? If so, could you tell her some of us want her to return ? And sooner rather than later !

Engie is recovering nicely in the Marzipan home for disturbed web characters. Right now she's in arts and crafts. She asked for a wrench and some scrap metal to make a OHGODWHATISTHATHOWISITFIRINGROCKETS!!!
G'luck. Baldur's Gate has wonderful characters, backstory and lots of written detail. I can't stand the choices in game design though, it's more frustrating than fun for me.
A wise choice Jo, just be sure to add mods to help improve the experience, it isn't the same to play the vanilla game, than enhanced with graphical updates, more characters, quests, banter, and so on.
