Concerning GW, there are a coupe of on-going WH40k webcomics that haven't been shut down, so I don't think that they're that strict. However, we don't see the ones that the do shut down ;]

maybe you could do some strips about world of tanks, dawngate (dota-like game but more interesting for me at least) :)

Most of fan works that get popular only increase the popularity of the inspirational product, not replace it.

I agree Starcraft and Warcraft were ripoffs of Games Workshop, but there's a big difference between pretending something is your new IP and making a derivative but respectful fan work.
