My second most played class is demo and this nerf was definitely necessary. Admittedly when I started playing demo all I did was sticky spam until I decided that I should use grenade launchers more and I've not looked back since. Charge'n'targe makes you so tanky, especially against other demos.
@D.D.Mining Co: Demomen are easily killable. The fact that they can do a ton of damage doesn't change the fact that if you're quicker with your rocket launcher, say, you can kill them before they kill you. So in my opinion they are not OP, and there is no reason to nerf them.
@D.D.Mining Co: Well, what you described depends on the demo not being seen and shot, and if the other team doesn't see a class then of course they'll do a lot of damage. A PYRO can set the whole team on fire if he can sneak up on them and he can kill a lot of them. Should pyros be nerfed, then?
I would take damage ramp up stickies if I could get my 6 grenade launcher shots back. The reason why everyone spams air burst stickies instead of nades is because 4 shots and the reload are two nads short of being effective. So use the deeper ammo count Sicky launcher for air bust nades.
@Kilgore Trout: It IS that easy. It depends a fair bit on map design, but generally a good Demoman player can roll up on an entire enemy team provided they don't all see him at once and aren't prepared to deal with sticky spam and grenades on short notice.
Maybe if they're going back to original weapons and changes, the Grenade Launcher will finally get the 6 shots it's model shows, eh? Maybe? That right there would encourage more use of it over the Sticky Launcher..
@D.D.Mining Co: Right, because it's so easy for a demo to storm the base without dying. There are lots of classes that can kill demos before they can do anything: soldier, sniper, heavy, spy, and (depending on the skill of the demo) an engineer with a sentry.
@A Wild Changeling: Okay, I'm annoyed. Nerf or not I have never had any trouble killing demos. And I do not get consistently dominated by demos either. If you needed this nerf so badly and are so butthurt about it not lasting, maybe it's not that demos are OP so much as you just aren't very good.
They can change the sticky launcher, but then they also have to change sentries, otherwise every non-engineer class gets screwed in the wake of the change.
The reason the nerf was terrible is because it indirectly buffed every engineer. I don't like fighting sticky demos, but I dislike having to fight multiple sentries more - and after the sticky nerf, every server I went on spammed level 3 sentries because they were almost indestructible.
I liked the nerf. Damage ramp up was ingenius. It didn't reduce Demoman's damage potential, it just reduced the retarded speed he could pump it out at, taking down his 'hurr durr storm the base kill everyone' and 'durr hurr run backwards winbomb everything' abilities. It did have downsides...

@Kilgore Trout: No, see, those stickies were placed more than 2 seconds ago, he'd be screwed either way.
Valve reverted the nerf because all the bad players with their precious australium killstreak stickies didn't want to put in the effort to actually learn how to play demoman, or bother to learn the correct way to use sticky bombs. The "Nerf" encouraged people to use the sticky bombs the correct way
So Valve guy reversed the nerf because he was scared of getting blown up by the stickies. BUT, ironically, the stickies wouldn't have hurt him very much before he reversed the nerf. PLUS, if he was afraid of them, couldn't he just nerf them even more?
(Maybe I think about these things too much...

They could reduce the damage of airburst stickies, perhaps.
