Well, Nintendo isn't exactly known for character development. In fact, they have a game where the protagonist is named after a color...
Fire Emblem is what comes closest to a good characters cast though.
Yanno, Samus. There's a certain guy in big green armor who just recently got out of a relationship after spending 4 years floating around in space. I'm sure he's available.

...other than "follow the alpha, so we can survive". Hope they actually elaborate on it, because the "child soldier grew up hard" backstory makes for interesting drama. All-business combat elite (w/ a sense of morality) who doesn't know how to live a 'normal' life has potential for char development

...throwing in with a bunch of bounty hunters. I think the fact she never discusses her past works because as a character, she would be a cold, distant woman because of her traumatic past. Other M seemed to fit because it was like a fixation on protectiveness, a time she let herself feel anything...

The sad thing is that Samus does have a backstory but the games never explore it. Basically she was a survivor of an attack by space pirates on a human colony, and ended up raised by previously mentioned bird-people. If I'm not mistaken, the history repeated itself, with Samus barely escaping and...
Because the last time they tried to give her anything resembling a relationship with a human, Metroid Other M happened
And we hope to god it NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN
Hmmm... wait a minute... anyone else having a distinct feeling of Deja-vu with this comic page? I feel like it has been used before for some reason...

Not all characters need a love interest, look at Master Chief or Bayyoneta. And about Samus lack of personality, the guys from extra credits delved into that:

To be honest, this comic look kind of biased.
... Anyone else feel like the character limit for comments is a bit small to correct people on certain aspects? like character backgrounds and game world details? seems like it is to me.
@T: Having a Chozo Adopted/not blood related uncle, doesn't mean she thinks she is one of them. She was raised with their help when she was in the 5-13ish age range. old enough to know she's not a bird person. And that was only because ridly and crew ransacked her home when she was a kid.
if memory serves, Samus was adopted by the Chozo (or bird people as they are commonly known apparently.) after Ridly and his crew of space pirates pillaged and sacked her home on some human settlement. Adopted uncle chozo saved and then on samus was bounty hunter after time skip.
@MrPriest: She grew up with the Chozo due to having an "adopted uncle" who was one when she was young and was living in a human colony somewhere-that's-name-have-forgotten-due-to-you-never-going-there-in-the-games, which was then sacked and looted by Ridly and his crew.
@Jacob Hansen: That's fine with me, I never played it, I think I've heard of him from one of the other handheld games, I think it was an AI that was supposed to mimic Adam?
@MrPriest: That would be Adam, her Commanding officer from when she was in the Federation army. Not directed at you specifically, but just want to say let us avoid an Other M argument on Adam in the comments.
I'd imagine there are a few reasons.
1. She grew up with bird people that I think are gone extinct (just use Ridley's tech to revive them or something!) I guess she does not find other humanoids attractive?
2. I don't remember well, but didn't she have a person she liked/respected that died?
@D.D.Mining Co: She's spent nearly her entire life getting shot at, almost getting eaten alive, and escaping exploding planets, ships, etc. Of course she'd have trust issues.
The real question is does she need someone? Something to consider is that she may have had an asexual leaning which was only enhanced by being raised by super birds. That doesn't preclude her from forming emotional bonds, just not necessarily sexual one. (Ignoring Other M )
If you ask me, Samus loneliness is probably deliberate considering how many have died or disappeared who she knew or could be considered close to her. Parents, Chozo, Baby Metroid, Adam (let us not open a can of worms here), Bounty Hunters from MP3. Cant imagine that is easy.
