It's because today, making good games now takes so much money that if it doesn't sell well, you WILL go bankrupt. Only Nintendo seem to be excempt form this, but that's because their bank can last for about 50 more failures.
Other companies aren't so lucky.
They cannot take any risks.
Capcom did put out a legitimately good game recently, that didn't overly focus on shiny graphics but on good gameplay and interesting characters. So, there's that. Too bad they didn't put more effort into the title. "Revelations 2", sure, good job chief.
Capcom has horrible business sense, but at least at it's core it is still trying to make solid titles. It's success in that regard is simply up to opinion.
Konami is the only one really going downhill fast, and it has more money tied up in gambling machines. It can afford to lose vidyas and live.
SUBSTANTIALLY more-so than there is here, due to the nature of their professional culture and the continual lack of the amount of free time needed to really enjoy "real' gaming.
Square at least IS putting out proper games still, it's just less and less of them are bothering coming over.(cont)
You know what...I figured it out. Viper is like a cat. Has the ability climb up and down anything, but it's still going to meow at you when it gets into the tree because it's scared of heights.
Ignoring the fact that Konami's little bout seems to be partiuclarly vitrolic and is probably more about internal conflict and finances than actual business philosophy...
Remember Jo, that all 3 of those companies are Japanese, and in Japan there is a massive push towards mobile(cont)
@MrPriest: If we're to trust valve cutscene animations...Viper not only has the power to glide, but the ability to gain altitude. The fact that he's stuck on a cliff just boggles the mind...but that's how game balance works I suppose.
(...cont.) Because of course you can have more content in an 16-bit retro style game, than a fully rendered 3D festival for the eyes. These people are choosing Quantity over Quality (at a lower price) and there is just no way in hell to fund a Multi-billion dollar company off of that kind of person.
"Hard Core Gamers" are too focused on Not Spending Money for any big company to make any profit off them with games for them. There appears to be no point in releasing a AAA game for the niche market, when those people are willing to pay for a cheaper experience that has more content... (cont.)
@MrPriest: A Manta ray doesn't hover and a Chicken lifts itself a few feet in the air and then glides down.
In order to hover you actually exert more energy than you do from flight. Not to mention hovering and moving at the same time, meaning he has he energy to maintain height while moving.

Let's hope that Inafune's company grow strong and either hire Hideo Kojima or Hideo makes his own company too, hopefully one of them could get the guys behind Silent Hill and other geniuses that were kicked out by the big corps.
@Klint Izwudd: Are you sure? His wings are more like a Manta Ray's wings.
What about Chicken, farm-ducks, and penguin wings?
Wings do not always bring with them the ability of flight, sometimes it is only for movement and kiting.
Also, considering his movement anim, his wings are not for flight..
@Raxyz: Well, it's also evolving. Indie is getting stronger and stronger, major publisher will have to step up or lose it all.
Also, I knew about the abilities, I just didn't think you could cause someone to be stuck...
@Klint Izwudd: Maybe the wings are only powerful enough to hover, and not fly?
@MrPriest: Yeap, Dota has rules of terrain. Cliffs and edges can't be climbed up or down unless there's a stair.
Rubick has a spell of lifting a hero and throwing it somewhere else (close to casting point). However, there are many heroes capable of doing that. Rubick's just easier.
Y'know, when I get to thinking about that Jo, I always end up depressed how fast gaminjg is declining. Not like it's dying, but it's kinda like losing soul. With the growth of popularitiy, gaming isn't about games at all, it's a bout simple addictive tasks with money to help you fulfill. It's sad.
