This is not how Memes work in the Japanese Fan Art Community. Maybe you're see less of your Western Friends and Audience sharing her, but if you follow Japanese Artists on Twitter or spend any amount of time on Pixiv, you're still going to be seeing a lot of Bowsette for months or even years.
Also fun how a lot of people are going "it'll end soon" "people will get tired" "it's a dead meme", wishful thinking it'll go away, and its been a week and it's still going strong...
In a shocking twist of events, the craze lived long enough to still be going when the comic joking about how it would be over before the comic came out came out. Japanese Twitter is in flames, and Nintendo's stock has risen significantly for reasons nobody can quite figure out.
Rather than a genderbending, I feel like Bowsette just ticks a lot of boxes for me with the fang, cute face, and sharply smug expression.
It kinda reminds me of Android 21 that way.
I think it's not about the genderbender thing, it's about the vast potential of the meme - "Pick up a crown and become a princess".
Soon Disney will pick it up, and make it a thing.
