CoD was '03, BF1942 was '02, MoHAA was also '02. CD was '01, HL1 was '98. Quakes 3 was '99. UT was '99, UT2k3 was '02. Halo came on PC in '03 and it was nothing special, PCs weren't deprived of good shooters like consoles were back in '01.
I dunno, shooting with those motion detection controllers like the wii is pretty fun even if the wii was a bit primitive. Resident evil 4 was nice on the wiimote.
I have a setup on my PC which I like to call Run & Gun. Flight stick on the left for character travel and the mouse for looking around & aiming. I still play like trash but I do far better than moving with the keyboard a/o aiming with the controller.
...So in my opinion, consoles only need to serve as the alternative to PC for days when you WANT something simpler hooked up to the TV that you only have to switch on/off while getting comfy in the couch. The problem is that non-Nintendo consoles should NEVER dabble in PC-functional exclusives.
PC will always be superior to consoles, that's why consoles need to create some kind of gimmick that computers don't have as a selling point, like the Switch. But me, after the PS2-era I migrated to PC and never looked back, with only minor skirmishes into the Nintendo era between the DS and Wii U
