Characters introduced in Smash Ultimate have more attention to detail and a genuine effort to link them to their source game. It isn't just their move sets, it is also alt costume choices, maps related to the character, and the inclusion of accompanying music.
The HotS team decided to reimagine her instead of a control-heavy assassin as a control-heavy tank. They stuck to the spirit instead of the mechanics, and that ushered in a wave of appreciation for the devs not just forcing a detested character in as-is. That's praise-worthy.
On the HotS thing: it was literally done to appease fans. Mei was the single most dreaded introduction in the game's history, because Overwatch characters had a reputation for being obnoxious and Mei was largely considered the most annoying and obnoxious character IN Overwatch.
I didn't like HOTS Mei either at first. Then after I gave it some thought, I bet they tried to translate her more directly at first, and realized they couldn't balance that mechanic in a MOBA. The game is at least more balanced than OW.
You are both right. I could say in Daisy's case she is just an echo of Peach so concessions were to be made but still.
I think Ganondorf is a reflex of when he was a Cap. Falcon clone.. now he is on this weird spot where he is an unique char but his moveset is already set in stone.
Let's be fair, Smash is guilty of its own inaccuracies. Ness has the spells of Paula for whatever reason, Wolf had a landmaster tank, Ice Climbers have unexplained ice powers & can suddenly spawn their own enemies, & Ganondorf fights like a slower Captain Falcon rather than using swords or magic.
