also, they are great for knowing what the developers think and expect of us.

Achievements are only good when used correctly. Like finding a part of the game that isn't obvious or easy. But stupid for points-sake.

The idea with achievements is kinda dumb these days.Achievements b4 were supose to be like a idea what you cna do in a game to make it more fun.Now its like a icon and text is more important than a real life acheivment..

@ Firewind: Good point. I wonder how many people simply haven't gone online since buying games and thus haven't updated their achievement lists...

Kongregate.
It a meta-game site.
Get achievements in the various games they have, those achievements then provide points to your account. (if you have one)
Then get levels from those points.

Steam does not track the number of people who go online to register the game then immediately switch back to "Go Offline" mode.

I know nobody looks at my "score" I do the ones I think would be fun just to see if I can do it. Sometimes it is an extra challenge to do something I would have never otherwise tried doing.

Developers are starting to use "achievements" to gauge how far players have gotten in a game, in addition to awarding cleverness. On Steam, apparently almost 20% of the people who buy Portal 2 never finish the tutorial.
Then there's the masochist achievements. No other explaination needed.
