What bleh said. All source engine games (except ones running on the more recent games, namely l4d through portal 2) have a hl2.exe. It is just how the engine works. tf2.exe and such simply execute hl2.exe.

hl2.exe is the default executable file valve used for most of their source based games, in addition or instead of an abbrevation for the game in question. (css.exe/tf2.exe/l4d.exe and so on..)

Fun fact: People have reported that they don't crash (as much) when they unequip their hats. Try it and see if it works for you.

Lordlundar is right! That is the reason why Team Fortress 2 or Portal took forever to install if you hadn't a version of HL2 installed. Only thats why I have everything hl2 installed (even if it isn't necessary anymore with the source package something, old habits die hard)

Not quite Xyoin. It's not that they're just using the same engine (otherwise games like Mass Effect would show Unreal being used), it's that they're all HL2 mods that run a bare bones version if they're installed without the real game.

the reason why tf2 crashes are named HL2.exe
is because all valve games are made in the same engine from HL2. That means TF2,CSS and portal have the same progress name. Simply because valve are using the accurate same gaming engine.

This will get resolved same way as boot.ini problem in EVE.

I'm more annoyed at the fact that valve took several of my hats out of my backback by overfixing a problem:(Bought hats, hats became non-craftable, complained to valve, another patch restores craftability, happy as problem is solved, 4 days later my hats are gone and my wallet is refunded)

Same thing happens to me with Portal. But I'm also a dummy who has an ATI card and Steam. It'll randomly stop working on me. Really annoying when trying to get that last challenge map done. =/

I was impressed when I saw that Portal 2 used a portal2.exe and not hl2.exe! Then I checked and saw that L4D2 uses left4dead2.exe and was "OMG did Valve stop using hl2.exe?!".

hl2.exe is the Source engine, the framework TF2 runs on.

Ergo, hl2.exe goes down, TF2 has nothing to stand on.

I think they already put a patch up fixing it, but I think it was also related to graphics drivers crashes somehow. The last hl2.exe crash I got coincided with a graphics driver crash, according to Windows' system log.

Shitload of crashes in a couple of last days. ME SO ANGRY!

Valve builds games off the source engine, the source engine process is hl2.exe
Several unofficial mods like The Hidden and Zombie Panic use source and hl2.exe too I think.

I think all the source engine games use the hl2.exe, except maybe Portal 2. I do hope the TF2/Source bugs get patched soon though, it's become hard to even play a round without crashing.

well its not so bad now, 4 people on the server i was playing on found hats and a pocket medic :D
