The question is if that break in flow constitutes a new person or not. Is a person the entirety of their shifting personality, in which case one could argue a back up is the same person, or is a backup a new person as we are the ever changing instant?
Maybe

@G Yes, however we are creatures of the present. We exist only in a single instant. We do change over time but it all flows from one into the other. If one were to die and be recreated from a backup then that flow would be broken and restarted. cont.
Really...

No photo note of "Let me ask you, does a machine like yourself ever experience fear?"

Depends.

Did Legion develop a 'ghost', like the Tachikomas did?

Then yes.

Thank you, GitS:SAC, for enlightening us.

NO.
but neither have we
(matérialist point of view)
i can add that Descarte can be refuted : his point is purely gramatical and dépend of the language.
plus, "beeing" and "having a soul" are différents

@Vanreis: Except if you go with Cogito Ergo Sum (Or "Je pense, donc je suis", or "I think, therefore I am") you wind up having zero reason to deduce that anything besides yourself really exists as a separate entity, or at all. I know I think, but I have no evidence that you think.

I'd say Legion has more of a "soul" than most humans.
Vulpis
I'd point out that us fleshies are just as much a machine--we're just based on chemistry rather than mechanics.

That said, Legion has soul! Two of them in fact, one on bottom of each foot! :-)

I agree. Commence Exterminatus.
Dean Stockwell

As said by Cylon John Cavil, in Battlestar Galactica, I would like to be a complete machine and still have my conscience. Just the thought of seeing all electromagnetic spectrum would be enough for all the things I would lose with the human body, even more worthwhile because I could live forever.

Really no I Robot quotes yet? There have always been ghosts in the machines.

Yes you have a soul. That is why i exterminate you and your entire race for the "good" ending.

@Maybe most of the cells comprising your body die and are replaced many times every year, so arguably "you" is being constantly replaced. The same is true mentally. Personality evolves over time, so you can't look to that as a constant either.

Gotta go with Cogito Ergo Sum. Its the only way you can get even a glimpse of truth.

@Adahn: Je pense, donc je suis. Anything self-aware may have a soul, but it is impossible for me to prove you are self aware. I think, therefore I am, but everything else is external stimulus. You SAY you think, but you may be lying. Descartes: 1 Everything else: 0

I love this philosophical concept, but there is no way I can believe machines to have a soul. Don't care how lifelike they are.

@thorgold: "Do gestalts of thousands of independent systems housed in a mobile platform dream of electric sheep?" doesn't flow as well.
Warmachine

A great example of a good plot derailed by incompetent writers. "We want to self determinate" to "Do we have soooooouls?" was so shitty...

@Kazmohdim: Yes brother, though it can be either way according to The Commandments of the Mechanicus: "The spirit is the spark of life." but also "The alien mechanism is a perversion of the true path." So it can go either way. Let's just use Exterminatus on it BECAUSE WHY THE FUCK NOT.

@thorngold, And I am the gestalt of colonies of millions of specialized single cell organisms and their chemical and electrical interaction... and some of them aren't even derived from my particular genetic blueprint. Don't see why Legions Calander App gets a full vote as "Geth." :P
CosmicKirby

But, what is worse, dying and not knowing if you actually had a creator, or living and knowing that your creator has no answers for you? That's the real dilemma artificial life has to face, faith isn't an option you're given an answer that leads nowhere.

Wow I can't believe you posted this. I finally found the time to get caught up on the series since I didn't play them until 3 came out. I hate waiting for games in a good trilogy with a great story. I actually just passed this part.

Adahn

Cogito ergo sum. In short, anything self-aware has a soul.
Unless it belongs to a race of synthetics created by organics from organics to kill organics so organics don't create synthetics that kill organics to safeguard the organics that can't create synthetics that kill organics.

Congratulations, Jo. You've started a philosophical debate in the comments. Do you realize how quickly these things can devolve into flame-wars?

On another note, I like the fact that Shepard just doesn't give a fuck.

Eeeeh but the thing with backups is that it is arguably not really you, as you, who you are now, will have lost your existance and it will be a simulacrum taking your place.
