Now I tried all the unlocks I can say: They are all incredible fun. Constant rocket jumping with gunboats or charging the field with Charging Targe is sweet.

But the unlocks aren't just useful. Targe blast / fire resist is a huge boon, specially in these explosive infested days. Direct Hit is a killer, the Bugle makes pushing easy. The bottle may be superior if you don't have the Targe but it isn't a piece of cursed damascus steel who cuts people heads.

People been shuning the Gunboats because you lose the shotgun but between the Imbalizer  and the Rocket Launcher I rarely find myself in need of another weapon.
