It's why I find the demon race in Frieren so weirdly refreshing. You know that trope where a supposed evil race aren't actually evil, just misunderstood?
Demons exploit the absolute hell out of that trope. They are actually a highly specialized predator of humans who use the

No need to explain or defend wanting happy endings, Jo.
Even JRR Tolkien himself stated that the human being itself inherently crave stories with well-earned happy endings. Sadly a lot of "post-Tolkien" writing (not just in the fantasy genre) get a bit lost in trying too hard to be "different"
Cont… it with 4wall breaking and “subverting” the original formula. Kinda like how Madoka subverted magical girl stereotypes only for a bunch of people trying to copy it to get the same success. In short, there are way too many “subversions” and “ironic” VNs because most can’t make legit ones.
I have very little actual experience playing these games. I do have watched some people play some of them and I read a bit about them as well. In theory I like the basic idea but I see a large number of “cute game is actually horror” and most of them seems like they are mediocre games trying to hide
This is why I like Slay the Princess. It pulls a reverse subversion by going into horror quickly, but ends up super wholesome in the end. The game is being entirely honest when at the very start it says "This is a love story."
Between DDLC and Miside, I always thought it was unfortunate that neither of them have more endings. Having one 'true' ending after a lot of effort on the part of the player is always a fulfilling experience. In the case of these games' sad endings, it left a sense of unfinished business.
Well, I can definitely see Doki Doki Literature Club in here, but that's the only one I know of. Largely because VNs aren't usually my thing, but DDLC is big.
I know of someone who gave up on FO3 because he wanted more FPS, less RPG. he had the same issue with Cyberpunk, Metro, Far Cry and the Outer Worlds.
