Modern games manage to be simultaneously too complex and too easy at the same time. Rest assured every button has a purpose, but once you figure them all out, you will never worry again.

There are a few exceptions though, like Mirror's Edge...

I don't mind the kind of difficulty in today's games either. However, I wish the dev's would stop assuming we're idiots. ("Run away from the police." No shit, sherlock?)

Back in my day we had spell slots, not that tarnation of 'mana' or 'magical points'. And we had to go to an Inn to refill then, not this 'potions' you kids have... I had to go all the way from Marsh Cave back to Elfheim, and no complaining!

I think the biggest reason gaming has reached a high point in my mind is the fact that it has come into its own as an artistic medium. I'm in my 30s, I have a life, a job, etc., and little time to game. When I do, I mainly do it for the design and the narrative and the characters.

LoL with a consistent group. We use vent but you don't really have to. just add me if interested and pm me in game.

I've got a pretty laid back group of competent DotA 2 players I play with, and a few of them are always very willing to help teach newbies. Usually playing on US West, btw.

I think of some of the old fighting games on home consoles which had optional handicaps which REALLY F*&%ing good players could use when playing against sibs and friends who either just sucked or weren't as good. Make it a visual reward as well, "Badge for pub handicap -5."

I wonder if a ladder point boost for taking a handicap in DotA2 would help even out the "skill" a bit. Say take an -X% to the primary stats and bonuses and get some +Y% to end of the round points. Would that be enough to get Hard core super awesome players something they could to keep help?

No challenge no fun. Most gamez these days are all about izi modo and linear storyline. Thats why watching someone playing them on youtube is more enjoyable than playing them...

I don't really "get" the point of achievements and keeping track of statistics. Completionists may get a kick out of them... me, at best a blank stare, at worst an OCD twitch. I play games for fun, not to "achieve" something.

The thing in old games be that quite hard is maybe back then multiplayer was just pretty limited or non-existant.

Been quite an age since i've played Dota, but I'm into LoL, just find me in Steam as Holy Kronos if you wanna play it sometime.

I love today's comic because of how true it is. The first games were tough: no checkpoints at all sometimes, increasingly challenging, not as many options, and you had to be VERY precise with movements. I still love classic games though even if the new ones offer better graphics and look better.

My friends were just talking the other day how games these days try too hard to make things too easy. I'm not a fan of masochistic hardcore games, but some games are so easy and full of shortcuts you might as well just watch a movie.

Things like "not killing any NPCs." I fully agree with a man known as Ironicus on that one. "If you let people live, only to get gamer-score, then you are a terrible person."

That definitely is one of the more annoying things about newer games. "Achievements." *sneer* As if doing something that I would likely have done normally anyway in the course of the game is "an achievement." It's also ridiculous just what some of these achievements exist for.

Did they have better grammar in your time? An artist of your caliber should not be reduced to a common internet lout who switches number in the middle of his sentence - even if it only describes his art.

i turned skyrim onto hardest settings and it wasent hard enough, now im looking for a mod that gives them forged items and enchanted gear that loses its buffs when they die so i cant just get it.

Most of the old games(I'm talking real old) had no cheats and finding them was a lot harder (pre-internet) not to mention no saves. I remember 1 game that remained plugged in for days while I was trying to beat it.

I love challenge. The reason i play most new games on the hardest setting available. (Pet peeve = unlockable difficulty) There are some exceptions - games designed around playthroughs or rank ups(e.g. RE 4 or Killing Floor) But games today are just mostly too rewarding for no real effort.

I heard NES games were sometimes deliberately hard to increase the game's lifespan.

I remember first playing Dota. Did bots a few times and picked a caster and just stacked Mana Regen. Finally just went online when I found out how and just kept playing and playing until I suddenly didn't suck.
