I think Eve Online is the only MMO that still gets new players after having been subscription for years.

Free to Play is a sign that a game isn't up to snuff and is losing subscriptions.

Note: not talking about a free trial where you are severely limited and the point is to lure potential players to subscribe, kinda like WoW's F2P mode.

Uhm... Anyway, every MMO is using the "free" bait as they see fit --whether it is beginning with free trial passes as in EVE or TOR or Starter Editions like WoW, Conan or Diablo III-- they might end with TLOTRO milking microtransactions from your plastic wallet.

The only thing that went free is a lvl-limited trial.

No the news was that they were CONSIDERING F2P, not that they WERE going to make the change. The news is they might or they might not after more analysis and marketing discussions.

I played SWTOR on the 26th, and I loved it. That was the Star Wars fan in me, not the MMO Fan. Eventually, I got tired of it, it offered nothing new that WoW didn't have- just more streamline like with crafting and shit. It offered NOTHING new or interesting aside from full voice acting everywhere.

I had an idea for a Portal 2 Coop level A thin verticle chamber with player 1's portal on the floor and right wall player 2 on the left wall and ceiling so anyone who goes through ends up in an endless Cross Shape.

With more and more customers refusing (and rightfully) to pay subscriptions for MMOs, more games will turn towards microtransactions, which are more palatable for customers, as it offers a theoretical choice and they can still lure you into playing by saying its free to play.

F2P is rapidly becoming the norm. With how many other MMOs are already F2P, it's really hard for a subscription game to compete. WoW can, because it's WoW. But what does TOR offer that makes it worth paying for after you finish the story?

Good. I've been wanting to return to SWTOR, but the monthly fee is a constant barrier. I like the game, but not enough to put down money each month while I'm on a wonky work schedule that allows for two, maybe three days of play tops.

F2P is great, especially for gamers. It's just not the moneymaker of 15 dollars a month from a million people. Thankfully more players are becoming aware that 60+15(m) is not worth the hours of generic gameplay and muffled social interaction, both of which can be found better elsewhere.
