I think a lot of why the 'WOW' factor in the PS4 is lost might just be from the fact Sony's forgetting it's greatest strength. It's colossal game library dating back to the PS1. Without backwards compatibility, what is the point of getting the PS4?

And (like many ppl already said) they need to come up with new stuff.
The Wii was great to revive lightgun shooters and the Wii U pad now can serve as inventory or map

PS3 has Playstation Move.
xbox 360 has Kinect.
But what's next?

@Shadow12000 I feel with you.
They need games that:
Tell stories (Heavy Rain, Alan Wake)
Deliver real Horror, instead of just gore (Amnesia for example)
Enhence the RPG feeling by more freedom for both JRPG and RPGs similar to Fallout/Elder Scrolls

In the end gameplay and design are what matter the most. It is not like board games are dying out because their graphics are too bad. People's imagination fills the holes anyway.

Well the trouble is you can only get so real with your graphics before you achieve photorealism, and suddenly realize you have nothing else up your sleeve. PS2 was getting close, PS3 got even closer, and now the next is getting to the point where high def graphics will no longer be a saving grade

With slightly better graphics and able to put a few more NPCs on the screen. I also want to see either complete games or cheaper games. Shouldn't have to buy DLCs to fill out a game that I've already paid $60 for because they wanted to release it before it was actually done.

@Querzis Looking at the Xbox-to-360 compatibility issues, very. Sony uses direct hardware emulation -a PS3 has a PS2 and a PS1 in it. That's expensive.
However, the XBox problem was that each game had to have it's developer code in the patch to make it playable on the 360. Didn't work.

The many ages of Engie. Charming!
Every other PSX had some compelling draw (Motorstorm, Tekken and Heavenly Sword for me), and the PS4 has thus far 1) a sadly sorry PC title and 2) no backwards compatibility. Sure PS3 hardware emulation would probably be cripplingly expensive, but still.

Oddly enough, the only thing that's truly excited me about any of the new console details is how PC-like the architecture is, which in turn means much easier porting of games to PC. I'm happy with my current crop of consoles and haven't seen a killer game yet announced for the new gen of consoles.

At some point we can make very nice graphics, and adding polygons allow us more detail, but can be hard to see as a huge leap forward
CJ
There's actually a scientific reason behind this. We've basically been multiplying the amount of triangles (polygons) by 10 with each generation of consoles once we went 3D. So if it started at 100 on PSX, PS2 was 1,000, PS3 10,000, and ps4 100,000.

So, one time Engie dyed her hair black and during the PS4-Annoucement, she cosplayed as Jill from RE3?
And yet, she still has no proper name?
T
Just going to through this out there. You can't judge a PS4 solely by specs against a PC. You're ignoring the OS level which is pretty hefty. Consoles have an OS that runs that is specific to the console rather than generic. Generic OS always has more bloat and eats away at more system resources.
Altherix
Custom "PC" hardware. Exclusive big name titles are getting rare, most big names are released on all platforms. That's why the, "Wow" factor has really disappeared from consoles. My PS3 is currently used as a video streaming device to my TV.
MartyMcFly
So AMD could develop a 20 core - it wouldnt change the fact that a console will never beat a PC in hardware (te PS4 is still a long time away)
The great thing about a console is that the developers can do their thing for only one setup thus creating a superior experience with the same hardware.

Currently the amount of NPCs in screen at same time during combat in pretty much most games is generally around 10-15 max.
Ramp that up to around 500 possible NPCs during one fight and I'll buy whatever console that game is on.
Mount and blade did 1000 NPC battles, why can't they?

I don't buy consoles as soon as they are released because they usually end up overpricing them to start with and they have a poor starting lineup of games. I find a new console release time is a good time to go back and play some of my old games. I bought my PS just before the PS2 release.
LonePaladin

Just keep in mind that the Atari 2600 cost $199 when it was released... in 1977. Adjusted for inflation: $590.48.
Tbh the latest Sony conference is a huge improvement from previous conference. Rather than showing gimmicks they actually show a ton of games we can expect.
In the end it's the games that sell the machine, and not the other way around.

The fact about consoles being more powerful than computers, is that halfway through the console's lifetime, low-end computers are more powerful than it anyway, thus developers have to "dumb-down" games to port them to the console. The solution: as @Salty said, be cheap, or do the Nintendo.
Salty

@Nullcast: Just FYI. I have a computer that's a year and a half old. I bought it for about $700, and it's STILL more powerful than the PS4 is supposed to be.

GCN and 8 cores (four modules then?) all sharing an address space and access to a largish pool of fast memory. And it's all guaranteed to be there? Yeah, I'm betting developers can do some very interesting things with that. That's a lot of potential for simulation.
