Me and a friend have been saying for years that the best match to watch would be between pro players who aren't allowed to use a keyboard, and are restricted entirely to a three button mouse with a scroll wheel.
I'm pretty sure there is a gamemode out there in custom with your exact description. Stop looking for excuses and play games instead of watching streams.
I remember AoE2. That game was crap. All these different people from history and they all looked like they were from europe? Only the buildings were different. Boring.
SC1 was fun, I really enjoyed that back in the day.
Special Forces Team X had this cool map system where it was a combination of 3 random or chosen areas right next to each other. So you could mix and match areas to mix it up.
@Aaron Chan: I didn't say BW had RMG, I was just saying that a lot of games had. SC2 were only better to play for people who were bad at the game, which is good for me, but bad for higher skill players.
Anyways, Age of Empires series have randomly generated maps, but from what I heard that led to some rather weird scrub rules about animal positions and other stuff in the competitive scene. I never understood why they can't have randomly generated maps that are symmetric and not TOO random.
@MangoMaster4: I don't understand your comment. BW also does not use randomly generated maps. If you mean other aspects of the game, I would say BW is better to watch, but SC2 is better to play. SC2 is hard enough as is without all the UI hampering.
@Aaron Chan: still not to the same degree as company of heros or dawn of war. And really it's still a difference of stats. And also while I do rag on SC I don't consider it a bad game, just not my cup of tea.
@Tyler Wang: And difference in damage type. While you can use Firebats vs Ultralisks, it is ill advised as they do 1/4 the damage, and that's not including how armor interacts with the 2x8 damage they deal. As for whether other strategy games are better? Depends on what you are looking for.
Tanks and battle cruisers. That is total bullshit. Then there is the fact that the game has no cover system so the firebat and marauder are just basically reskins of the regular marines with the only difference being the stats.
Just gonna rag on SC for a bit, but I don't consider it a good strategy game. I mean unlike coh or dow there isn't really a point in building different units seeing as all units can dmg each other regardless of type. Your dudesupport with machine guns can dmg tanks and armored units as well as
@Peter Sadlon:
OW is a tactical game the same way tic-tac-toe is. Don't forget that it's a casual game designed for casuals. Also disclaimer before someone gets buttmad about that, calm down and just enjoy the games.
There's actually no reason why your idea shouldn't be able to work Jo. The maps always were a reason why SC2 was worse than BW anyway, and strategy games have been doing randomized maps well for a very long time both before and after starcraft.
@Censuur SC&SC2 are strategy just not in the tradition of grand strategy, it is more tactical strategy with a fair amount of micromanagement compared on a real battle (one would still generally issue order like scout these coordinates or attack the enemy here or retreat to there).
@Joe Pereira:
I know this will sound a lot like an ad, but the Developers of Monaco are creating a nice RTS around randomly generated Maps: It's called Tooth and Tai and you could/should certainly give it a roll! Here's the link to the chat.

In theory it should be possible to generate a random but still symmetrical map. I do agree with you, random map generation is such a big deal in strategy games, if you don't have those then all the maps might as well be one big open arena since that's what they become at high level play.
